SENT sensors for the emissions standards Euro 6d ISC-FCM (Euro 6d Final), Euro 6e, Euro 7 “Ready” and Stage 5 petrol and diesel engines

The latest digital sensor technology, known as SENT sensors, is widely employed in both petrol and diesel engines to meet the stringent emissions standards of Euro 6d ISC-FCM (Euro 6d Full) and Euro 7 "Ready".

These sensors, predominantly utilised in the automotive industry, serve various purposes such as measuring boost pressure, intake manifold pressure, and fuel pressure.

The primary advantage of SENT sensors lies in their rapid digital data transmission capability. This transmission method is relatively resistant to interference signals, ensuring reliable communication.

Moreover, SENT sensors enable multiple measured values to be transmitted on a single line within the transmission protocol. For instance, a boost pressure sensor not only detects boost pressure and charge air temperature but also regulates injection quantity. Without capturing and processing the SENT signals, optimizing engine performance becomes challenging.

The intricate process of capturing, processing, and outputting modified SENT protocols in a processor demands specialized technology.

Additionally, SENT sensors not only capture values and digitally transmit them to the engine control unit but also provide supplementary data stored within the sensor itself, including sensor type, part number, counter, and scaling.

Typically, a boost pressure is transmitted in a 12-bit variable, offering 4096 possibilities. Simplifying the scaling is straightforward if each possibility equals 1 mbar.

However, it's worth noting that some vehicle manufacturers employ SENT sensors with their scaling, leading to variations in interpretation. For example, while 1,000 mbar might correspond to 1 bar ambient pressure in some cases, it could be only 400 units for others.

There's an extensive array of around 80 different SENT sensors available for recording pressures, quantities (such as air mass), and positions (such as camshaft and crankshaft) from approximately 30 manufacturers like Bosch, Sensata, and Valeo. These details are outlined in SAE 2716.

Despite their advantages, SENT sensors have a drawback: they possess a limited linear range within which values are reliably recorded.
